Rimsky-Korsakov's Easter Festival Overture opens the programme in spectacular fashion, full of colour and energy, with music that feels like a festival in full flow.
The spotlight then turns to Freddy Kempf for Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. Kempf is one of the UK's most exciting pianists, known for combining electrifying technique with real musical intelligence. This piece is a perfect showcase: playful, lyrical and dazzling by turns, building towards the famous 18th variation -a moment of stillness that feels almost suspended in time. In Kempf's hands, it becomes not just a display of virtuosity, but a gripping musical journey.
After the interval, Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10 shifts the mood completely, with forty-eight minutes of tragedy, despair, terror and violence and two minutes of triumph! Premiered directly after the death of Stalin it depicts the tumult of the Stalin years, and is full of wistful tender moments, grand marches, witty waltzes and strong personal statements, including his famous musical signature, the D S C H motif, embedded into the score.
With Peter Selwyn conducting, this is a programme that holds nothing back.
