We are delighted to welcome guest conductor Michael Cobb for a programme inspired by nature in all its forms from restless seas to deep, quiet forests.
Debussy's La Mer opens the concert. The most famous evocation of the sea in classical music, La Mer captures the water not as a fixed image but as something constantly changing: light, movement and energy shifting from moment to moment. It is vivid, immersive music that rewards simply letting it wash over you.
Clarinettist Robert Plane then performs Ruth Gipps' Clarinet Concerto. Plane has been a leading champion of Gipps' music, and his close association with her work brings real insight to this lyrical, characterful concerto. The music itself is expressive and free-flowing, giving the soloist space to sing, dance and soar.
After the interval, Sibelius' Symphony No. 1 moves us into a different world again: broad, atmospheric and rooted in the landscapes of Finland. It is music shaped by stillness as much as sound, full of space, depth and quiet intensity.
