Our last concert in the series contains a mixture of the familiar and less familiar.
We start with Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 whose elegance and evocative melodic charm always seems fresh despite being one of the most well known pieces of classical music.
Laura van der Heijden, our cello soloist, is another BBC Young Musician Competition winner, having taken the title in 2012. In 2013 she played the Saint-Saëns First Cello Concerto with the RTWSO and we are very pleased she is coming back to play Walton’s Cello Concerto, the work she played as the BBC Young Musician winner. It is a wistful, romantic piece with lush harmony and one of the most accessible of modern cello concertos.
Our concert series ends with Richard Strauss’s massive tone poem Ein Heldenleben (A Hero’s Life), a highly descriptive portrait of the composer’s life and works and containing some of the most forward-looking music written at the end of the 19th century by this extraordinarily gifted composer.
