In its concerts the RTWSO has long championed young soloists just embarking on their careers and our February programme follows this tradition by featuring Martin James Bartlett who, aged 17, won the BBC Young Musician Competition in 2014. He has gone on to achieve considerable concert success, including a BBC Proms debut in 2015, and we are delighted to have him to play Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 as part of an all-Russian programme.
This concerto radiates wit and vitality alongside lyricism and brilliance and acts as a perfect bridge between Tchaikovsky’s melodic and romantic Fantasy Overture Romeo & Juliet and Shostakovich’s darkly intense Symphony No. 5. Both the Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich works are among each composer’s most well known compositions: the Romeo & Juliet love theme has been used in countless films and TV series and the Symphony No. 5, Shostakovich’s famous response to Soviet criticism, was acclaimed as an unprecedented triumph at its first performance.
