We are delighted to start our 2017-2018 season by welcoming the internationally renowned mezzo soprano Sarah Connolly to sing Elgar’s Sea Pictures – five songs with orchestral accompaniment each about the sea in its different moods.
Sarah is much in demand in the opera house and on the concert platform and she has made two award-winning recent recordings of Sea Pictures. Our concert starts with Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály’s lively Dances of Galánta, inspired by the gypsy folk music from the Galánta region of Hungary (now in Slovakia) where the composer lived.
We end with Brahms’s First Symphony, a work the composer contemplated for many years before committing his ideas to paper and the result is a monumental achievement – a symphony worthy of standing alongside the great symphonies of Beethoven.
